The many faces of St. Francis from the Basilica

Pax et Bonum!

Come and walk with us the Way of the Cross.
Come and meditate upon Christ's redeeming sacrifice.

Now, As we move to the next station, let us sing,

At the cross her station keeping,
Stood the mournful Mother weeping,
Close to Jesus to the last.

The First Station---Jesus is condemned to Death

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee
Because by Thy Holy Cross, Thou hast redeemed the World.

Mark 15:6-15

At the festival season, the Governor used to release one prisoner at the people's request.
As it happened, the man known as Barabbas was then in custody with the rebels who had committed murder in the uprising.
When the crowd shouted, asking for the usual favor,
Pilate replied, "Do you wish for me to release the King of the Jews?"
For he knew that it was out of malice that Jesus had been brought before him.
But the chief priests incited the crowd to ask for the release of Barabbas rather than Jesus.
Pilate spoke to them again, "Then what shall I do with the man you call King of the Jews?"
The crowd shouted back, "Crucify him!"
"Why, what harm has he done?" Pilate asked
Yet, the crowd shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"
So, Pilate, in his desire to satisfy the mob, released Barabbas to them; and had Jesus flogged and handed over to be crucified.
O my Jesus, it was not so much Pilate as my sins which condemned Thee to death on the Cross. Save me, by Thy death, from eternal death, my Lord and my God!

Our Father, Who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come
Thy Will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,
For Thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with thee,
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. AMEN.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the World,
Have mercy upon us.
Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the World,
Have mercy upon us.
Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the World,
Grant us Thy peace.

As we move to the next station, let us sing.

Through her heart, His sorrow sharing,
All His bitter anguish bearing,
Now at length the sword had pass'd.

The Second Station--- Jesus is made to carry his cross

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee
Because by Thy Holy Cross, Thou hast redeemed the World.

Mark 15:21

Then they took Him out to crucify him.
O my Jesus, this cross of Thine should rightly be mine. Thanks be to Thee for Thy redeeming love.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come
Thy Will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread

The Lord is with thee,
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. AMEN.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As we move to the next station, let us sing

Oh, how sad and sore distress'd
Was that Mother highly blest
Of the sole-begotten One !

The Third Station--- Jesus falls for the First Time

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee
Because by Thy Holy Cross, Thou hast redeemed the World.

Lamentations 1:14, 16-17
He hath made my strength to fall, the LORD hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up. For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed. Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her

O my Jesus, how you suffered! Grant me a share in Thy resignation in trials. Teach me to carry my cross and follow you.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come
Thy Will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,
For Thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with thee,
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. AMEN.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As we move to the next station, let us sing

Christ above in torment hangs;
She beneath beholds the pangs
Of her dying glorious Son.

The Fourth Station--- Jesus meets His Mother

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee
Because by Thy Holy Cross, Thou hast redeemed the World.

Lamentations 3:13, 15, 18
What thing shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee? All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem. Let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease.

O my Jesus, may no human tie, however dear, keep me from following Thee.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come
Thy Will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,
For Thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with thee,
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the World,
Grant us Thy peace.

Whelm'd in miseries so deep
Christ's dear Mother to behold?

A man called Simon, from Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they pressed him into service to carry the cross.
O my Jesus, how often we are called from our tasks in order to serve Thee. Simon was compelled by force to carry Thy cross. Teach us, daily and willingly to take up our crosses and walk with Thee.

Great numbers of people followed, many women among them, who mourned and lamented over him.
O my Jesus, how often we fail to do the little things that we can do for people as we are overwhelmed by the larger set of circumstances. Teach us, like Veronica, to see the small needs of those around us. And give us Thy grace to do the good acts of ministry.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come
Thy Will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.

Isaiah 53:3-6
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

O my Jesus, by Thy second fall, preserve me, dear Lord, from relapse into sin!

Our Father, Who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come
Thy Will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.

For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?
O my Jesus, teach us ever to value life!

Hallowed be Thy name.

Thy Will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me. For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me. Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me.

O my Jesus, when weary upon life's long journey, be Thou my strength and perserverance!

The soldiers took possession of his clothes and divided them into four parts , leaving out the tunic. The tunic was seamless, having been woven in one piece throughout; so they said to one another, We must not tear this -- let us toss for it. And thus the text of the Scripture came true, They shared my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.
O my Jesus, my soul has been stripped of it's robe of innocence; clothe me, dear Lord, with the garb of penance and contrition.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven

Mark 15:33-39

At midday, a darkness fell over the whole land and lasted until three in the afternoon. At three, Jesus cried aloud, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" which means "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?" Some of the bystanders, on hearing this, said He is calling for Elijah.
A man soaked a sponge in vinegar and held it to Christ's lips on the end of a cane.
Let us see, said he, if Elijah will come to take him down.
Then Jesus gave out a loud cry and died.
The curtain of the temple was torn into two from top to bottom.
And when the Centurion who was standing opposite Him, saw how Christ had died, he said,
Truly, this was the Son of God.
O my Jesus, even while dying Thy sacred heart throbbed with love for Thy sinful children. Teach us to love one another as Thou hast first loved us.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy name.

Thy Will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.

When evening came; as it was Friday, Joseph of Arimethea, a respected member of the Council, a man who looked forward to the kingdom of God went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate was surprised to hear that He was already dead. So, Pilate sent for the centurion and asked him whether it was long since Jesus had died. And when Pilate heard the centurion's report, he gave Joseph permission to take the body. So, Joseph brought a linen sheet, took Him down from the Cross, and wrapped Him in the sheet.

O Mary, my most sorrowful Mother, the sword of grief went through thy tender heart as thou held thy Son, lifeless, in thy arms. O my mother, receive me into thy arms.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven

Now, at the place where Jesus had been crucified, there was a garden. In the garden, there was a new tomb, not yet used for burial. There, because the tomb was nearby, and because it was the eve of the Jewish Sabbath, they laid Jesus.

O my Jesus, bury my sins with Thee in Thy tomb. Grant that I may rise to a new life and avoid sin so that I may serve Thee faithfully all the days of my life.

Virgin of all virgins best,
Listen to my fond request
Let me share thy grief divine.

Let me, to my latest breath,
In my body bear the death
Of that dying Son of thine.

Wounded with His every wound,
Steep my soul till it hath swoon'd
In His very blood away.

Be to me, O Virgin, nigh,
Lest in flames I burn and die,
In His awful Judgment day.

Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence,
Be Thy Mother my defence,
Be Thy cross my victory.

While my body here decays,
May my soul Thy goodness praise,
Safe in Paradise with Thee.
Amen.

Let us pray:
